The Quakers saw their first lettered tombstone when Abraham Painter died. He was the father of Isaac, Walter, and William. When he died he was hauled to the Goshen graveyard near Zanesfield. Three men and three horses and a wagon were required to transport the body to the place of interment. One man rode horseback and drove the team with a single line and the other two rode in the wagon to keep the coffin from turning over in going over the stumps and deep chuck holes, thinking nothing of what might cause him to turn over in his grave. Abraham had a very intimite friend at Chillicothe, Ohio, who was entering upon the business of tombstone cutter. To advertise his business and memory of his friend, he exemplified his art in cutting, hauling, and putting up a tombstone at the head of Abraham Painter's grave.one woman observed that Abraham had turned over in his grave and others thought he might because of such an idolatrous inscription over his head. So incensed did they become that they took their axes and broke the tombstone to pieces andAbraham Painter to this day is without a tombstone at his grave.
