Mathematician. Professor of Mathematics. Became naval Minister in the Revolutionary government in 1792. Took part in Napoleon's Egyptian campaign. A founder (with Lazar Carnot) of modern analytic geometry; also interested in chemistry. Body removed to the Pantheon in 1959.
