Josefa Slama, daughter of Jan and Josefa Kuncova Slama, was born in Tri Studne, Nove Mesto, Moravia, which was then part of the Austria-Hungary Empire. Her mother died in Moravia. Her father then married Josefa Havlikova. Josephine immigrated in 1878 with her father, step-mother, two brothers, three sisters, and one half-sister. They settled first in Wilber, Nebraska and then in Clay County, near Fairfield, Nebraska.

Josephine married Frank J. Prokop on July 11, 1879 in Wilber, Nebraska. They had seven children. In addition to Ida linked below, the children were:
