ANNA LEE EWING (FRAKES/ BRYAN) Anna Lee , age 88, of Edwards, Mo., passed away Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at 2:57 in Golden Valley Hospital, Clinton, Missouri. She was a resident of Warsaw Health & Rehabilitation for 9 years. Prior to this she was a resident of Arrowhead Estates, Edwards, Missouri for 30 years.
Anna Lee was born July 20, 1923 in rural Wakenda, Missouri, the daughter of John Thomas Ewing and Agnes Helen Antener. She was raised by the Missouri River on a farm in the Wakenda and Grand Pass bottoms. She attended Riverside County Grade School in Wakenda, Missouri and she graduated from Santa Fe High School in Grand Pass, Missouri. She was a member of the Christian Church in Carrollton, Missouri. She descends from immigrant Justice Robert Ewing of Logan County Kentucky 1718-1787. Anna Lee married Happy Charley Frakes, "Hap," July 29, 1940 and she settled down to a life of child rearing, housekeeping and gardening. Her family will always remember her mouth watering homemade dinner rolls slathered with real butter, a recipe passed down from Edna Mardquedt, her German grandmother. She served them up with pan fried chicken, mashed potatoes & gravy, fresh corn on the cob, green beans, and big tomato slices, all of which she raised herself. She had a life-long passion for flowers of all kinds and she planted them everywhere. Hap built her a greenhouse so she could grow tropical plants. She sold flowers for Memorial Day and other occasions. The flood of 1951 destroyed her home in the Waverly bottoms and she relocated to Grand Pass where she lived with her family contented, until the loss of her husband due to illness in 1964. For the first time, she worked outside the home in nursing at the Waverly Clinic in Waverly, Missouri. The Ewings and Frakes histories are recorded in books: Mercer County Pioneer Traces Vol. I and History of Saline County 2000.
In 1966 she married Ralph Frederick Bryan of Grand Pass, Missouri. Ralph and Anna moved to southern California and she continued her nursing career in Bellflower at the city hospital. They lived happily in California for ten years and traveled extensively to nearly every state and tourist attraction in the United States and into Canada. She took early retirement at 60 with her husband Ralph. They moved to Edwards, Missouri in 1981 where he and her family built their retirement home on the lake in the Ozarks below Truman Dam. This is where she lived out the rest of her days doing what she loved most: raising flowers, traveling, reading, viewing satellite TV, bird watching, feeding her favorite wild critters, sipping tea in front of her big picture window and watching the Spoonbillers and bass fishermen. She especially enjoyed sitting on her dock watching her family and grandchildren fish and play on the lake and sharing it all with her constant and devoted companion, Ms Cotton, a beautiful long hair blue point Siamese cat. In her last years, she enjoyed dining and visiting with her friends and companions after the death of her husband Ralph.
Anna Lee was preceded in death by her parents and her husband's: John T. Ewing October 11, 1996, Agnes Helen Antener May 7, 1983, Ralph Frederick Bryan September 29, 1989 and Happy Charley Frakes June 10, 2006. She is survived by her sister, Ruth Evelyn (Anderson) of Baldwin Park, California, three sons and three daughters: Charles Herbert Frakes of Merrill, Michigan, Raymond Edward Frakes and wife Dixie of Grandview, Missouri, Earl Wayne Frakes and wife Penny of Raytown, Missouri, Diana Ruth Tyler and husband Donald R.Young of Edwards, Missouri, Katherine Irene Anderson of Lee's Summit, Missouri and Barbara Lee of Wisconsin. Other survivors: eleven grandchildren, six great grandchildren and a wealth of nieces and nephews.
Graveside Services and Internment for Anna Lee will be held at 1:00 P.M., Monday, August 22, 2011 at The Grand Pass Cemetery in Grand Pass Missouri. Family and friends may call from 8:00 to Noon, Saturday and also from 8:00 to 11:00 A.M., Monday prior to graveside services at the Reser Funeral Home, Warsaw. Recorded music: The old Rugged Cross and In the Garden. Pallbearers: sons and grandsons, Charles Herbert Frakes, Raymond Edward Frakes, Earl Wayne Frakes, Earl Wayne Frakes Jr., Keith Edward Frakes and Kevin Lee Frakes.
