John O. Jones
Fort Benton--John O. Jones, 75, a retired teacher and longtime resident of Fort Benton, died of natural causes Tuesday at a Fort Benton hospital.
The funeral is at 3 p.m. Saturday at Fort Benton United Methodist Church, with burial in Riverside Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice Jones of Fort Benton; son, Michael Jones of Missoula; daughters, Shelley Jones of Fort Benton, and Robyn Good of Floweree; two grandchildren; two cousins, Edger Jones, of Elk River, Minn., and Gertrude Walter, of Lake Crystal, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Iva and Bob Coo, a brother-in-law, Ed, and a sister-in-law, Marlene.
John was born May 5, 1930 in Great Falls, to Oswald and Ethel (Westfall) Jones. His mother died when he was ten days old, and he was raised by his father and grandparents in Fort Benton. He attended school in Fort Benton and after graduating from high school he worked for the ASC office before going to Rocky Mountain College in Billings, where he received his teaching degree.
John taught for two years in Lovell, Wyo., before coming back to Fort Benton and teaching for 30 years, retiring in 1988. He was the yearbook advisor for many years, and touched many young people's lives in his years of teaching. He was a member of the Fort Benton United Methodist Church, taught Sunday School for many years, and was on the board of trustees and many committees for the church. He was a past member of the Masonic Lodge of Fort Benton. He was also a former owner of the Freeze in Fort Benton.
He married Bernice Ashworth on June 30, 1962, in Sunburst, Mont.
John had a great love of photography and enjoyed camping and spending time with his children, taking them to new places. He worked at the visitors center and enjoyed sharing with the people his great knowledge of Fort Benton.
He "always had a smile on his face" and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
