Born is Union, he was a son of Mrs. Imogene Salley Gilliam and the late James Louis Gilliam Sr.
He was a graduate of Wofford College with a degree in chemistry, attended the University of South Carolina Law School for two years and was a veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs Elizabeth Frey Gilliam; his mother of Spartanburg; a daughter Miss Ann Elizabeth Gilliam of Aiken; three sons, William W. and T. Conrad Gilliam of Aiken and James L. Gilliam III of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; a sister, Mrs. Eleanor Frances Anderson of Spartanburg; and a brother, Eugene F. Gilliam of Columbia.
Memorial services will be 5 p.m. Wednesday at the St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church.
