Bob LaFollette's Widow, 67, Dies

NEW YORK (AP) — Mrs. Robert M. LaFollette Jr., 67, widow of the senator from Wisconsin, died Wednesday in Roosevelt Hospital. She became ill while visiting her son, Joseph 0. LaFollette, and his wife during the Christmas holidays. The cause of death was not determined immediately. Her husband served as senator from Wisconsin from 1925 to 1946, succeeding his father who was senator from the same state for 19 years. Mrs. LaFollette made her home in Washington and Madison, Wis. Before her marriage she had been a secretary to Sen. LaFollette Sr., and later his son. Survivors in addition to her son, Joseph, include another son, Bronson of Madison, Wis.; three sisters, Louise and Matilda Young of Washington, and Sophie Stokes of Los Angeles, and a brother, Arthur Young of Peoria, Ill.
Excerpts from:
The Wisconsin State Journal - Dec. 28, 1961
Madison, WI

Mrs. LaFollette, the former Rachel Wilson Young, had served as secretary to her husband and to his father, Sen. Robert M. LaFollette Sr., before her marriage to the young senator Sept. 17, 1930. The marriage was performed in the LaFollette farm home in Maple Bluff. At that time her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ludwick Craven Young, were neighbors of the LaFollette family in Washington. Her father-in-law, the elder LaFollette, was a U.S. senator from Wisconsin for 19 years before his death in 1925. In 1924 he was the Progressive party candidate for president and won Wisconsin's electoral votes. He also served as governor of Wisconsin. Mrs. LaFollette took part in the campaigns that led to the break of the Progressive wing from the Republican party. She was a campaign assistant in the elder LaFollette's bid for the presidency and in later campaigns of her husband. In the 1930s and 1940s, Mrs. LaFollette's husband and his brother, Philip, headed the Progressive party in Wisconsin until it was disbanded in 1946.
NOTE: This Contributor advises that Rachel was born in 1894, per passport, along with multiple ship manifests where Rachel's date of birth is recorded as June 9, 1894. Rachel's sister, Sophie was born in 1896. Headstone photo gives date of birth as June 9, 1896, which is apparently in error.
This comment - "Memorial for Rachel Young LaFollette 6/9/1896 - 12/26/1961 between graves 12 & 14." - was found on the Forest Hill Cemetery website, using their Burial Records Search feature.

A burial search for last name of LaFollette on the Forest Hill Cemetery website does not result in her name specifically, however she is mentioned in notes under her husband's name. Nothing results in a search for La Follette; instead all are under the spelling of LaFollette.
