Daniel was one of the original settlers in Minnesota City as a member of the Western Farm and Village Association. On February 27, 1864, at the age of 42, Daniel and his sixteen year old son, Francisco, enlisted in the 7th Infantry, Minnesota Company B. He and his Regiment were honored for their bravery during the Battle of Nashville. He mustered out on August 16, 1865 and lived and farmed in Minnesota City until his death at the age of 93.
