Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served in the Union Army as a Brevet Brigadier General. He was awarded the Medal of Honor as a First Lieutenant in the 2d US Cavalry for action on June 1, 1861 at Fairfax, Virginia. His citation reads "Twice charged through the enemy's lines and, taking a carbine from an enlisted man, shot the enemy's captain."
