Miss VELMA "VEL" VIOLET BLEDSOE was the daughter and the 5th child born to Rev. Thaddeus Cornelius Bledsoe Sr. and Mrs. Hattie Bell (Ector) Bledsoe.

"Miss Bledsoe Rites Thursday ---
Services for Miss VELMA VIOLET BLEDSOE, of 1101 West Claude, Tyler, are set for 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Bethlehem First Baptist Church with the Rev. E.W. Thomas Jr. and the Rev. F.N. Marshburn officiating. Burial will be in Westview Cemetery under direction of Brooks-Sterling Funeral Home. Deacons and Trustees of Bethlehem First Baptist Church will serve as pallbearers.

Miss Bledsoe died, after a lengthy illness, on Sunday in a hospital in Tyler, Texas. A native of Marshall, Texas, she lived many years in Smith County, Texas where she attended Tyler public schools. Miss Bledsoe received a bachelor's degree from Bishop College, in Marshall, and Chicago Musical College. She did graduate study at New England Conservatory of Music, University of Southern California and the University of Denver. She taught music in Texas and Oklahoma, and she taught three deaf girls to play a piano at the Deaf, Dumb and Blind Institute in Austin. Miss Bledsoe was a member of Bethlehem First Baptist Church where she was organist for several years. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association of Tyler, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and American Woodman Lodge Camp No. 68. She was the recipient of the distinguished service award in music from the faculty of Stanton University. She was a member of the 50th Anniversary Class of Bishop College in 1973.

Survivors include two nephews, Dr. Ralph Emerson Bledsoe and Dr. Raleigh C. Bledsoe, both of Los Angeles, California; a great-nephew, Ralph C. Bledsoe Jr., of Los Angeles, California; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Irene E. Bledsoe, of Los Angeles, California."
