GREENVILLE-- On June 25, 2007, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, the magnificent life of Dr. George Frederic Salle came to a gentle close.
The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Bob Hudak officiating. There will be a service and burial at 1:30 p.m Friday at Manakin Episcopal Church and Cemetery, Powhatan, Va., where his family was one of the founding members.
Dr. Salle was born 101 years and 15 days ago on June 13, 1906, approximately 20 miles west of Richmond, Va., into a family descended from French Huguenots. He attended the University of Virginia and obtained his medical degree in 1933 from the Medical College of Virginia.
For almost 50 years he practiced the healing art of medicine in eastern North Carolina, first as a general practitioner in Vanceboro, practicing out of what is now known as Pat?s Soda Shop.
In 1953, he returned to the Medical College of Virginia and specialized in urology under the eminent Dr. Austin Ingram Dodson, chairman of the Department of Urology. After finishing his training, he came to Greenville and began practice in 1956 as the first urologist in Greenville, where he continued to practice medicine until he was 92.
On Dr. Salle's 100th birthday, he was honored by the Pitt County Medical Society and the North Carolina Medical Society. The Pitt County Board of Commissioners passed a resolution of appreciation, and Greenville Mayor, Don Parrott, proclaimed June 13, 2006, as Dr. George Frederic Salle day. He also received the Century Club Certificate of Appreciation from Governor Michael Easley, and Congressman Walter B. Jones sent his personal congratulations.
He is survived by his wife, Teresa Salle of the home; three daughters, Dr. Judy Yongue of Greenville, Katherine Peltz of Manchester, Vermont, and Carol Habermann of Boston, Massachusetts; one son, George Frederic Salle Jr. of Greenville; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
