City Officer Wounded; Poca Constable Accused

City Policeman Raymond Munson of 1311 Savage drive, Pine street hill, is in critical condition at St. Francis hospital with a bullet wound to the abdomen received early Monday while attempting to arrest Arthur (Ott) Holmes, Kanawha county Constable of Poca district, at Washington and Patrick streets.

It was reported that his condition is so critical that physicians will not operate to remove the bullet from his lower abdomen. Blood donors were summoned early in the morning.

Held in City Jail

Holmes, charged with shooting Officer Munson, driving while drunk and resisting arrest isin the city jail pending his release under a $5,000 bond fixed by Municipal Judge Cyrus W. Hall. A preliminary hearing has been set for Dec. 17.

Holmes made a statement early Monday in the presence of Police Chief W. A. Tully and Detective Lieutenant Edgar C. Bourne.

Following questions of Holmes and Munson, the police story of what occurred is as follows:
Shortly after 1 a. m., Monday, a telephone call was received at headquarters asking that officers be sent to the 3700 block of Washington street, West, to arrest Holmes because he was creating a disturbance. Officers Munson and L. R. Williams were sent to the scene.

Struck Officer and Fled

They found Holmes on the street and placed him under arrest. Just as they were placing him in the cruiser car, Holmes struck Williams in the face and fled.

The two officers went to headquarters and obtained a warrant for the constable. Returning to that area, they saw him walking along Washington street, just below Patrick street. They got out of their car and when Holmes saw them, he pulled his pistol and began to run. As the officers chased him, he turned and while running, fire four times. One of the shots struck Munson in the abdomen.

Officer Munson, the chief said, hesitated only momentarily. He continued the chase and caught Holmes. Throwing the constable to the ground, he took Holmes pistol and hit him on the head with it several times.

Returning to the cruiser car, Munson became too ill from loss of blood and shock to drive. Officer Williams was holding Holmes so another man drove the car to police headquarters. From there Munson was taken to the hospital.
