Jacob Gerringer went west after the deaths of his parents in 1812 and 1814. He appears briefly in the deeds of Lancaster County, Ohio before settling with his large family in Jay County, Indiana. After living in Indiana for some time, Jacob moved on west to Illinois where he is supposed to have worked on cattle drives moving cattle from central Illinois to Chicago. Family tradition says that he died while working at this occupation and was buried somewhere along the trail.
