Norman James Baker, 71, Coeur d'Alene, died Tuesday, May 16, 1989, at Sunset Terrace Extended Care.

Born July 1, 1917, in Sweet Grass, Mont., to Clarence and Nellie (Thompson) Baker, he moved with his family to Bonners Ferry from Coots, Alberta in 1923. He graduated from Bonners Ferry High School and Telegraphy School in Spokane. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army. The family moved to Coeur d'Alene in 1958.

He worked as a telegrapher for the Spokane International (now Union Pacific) Railroad and also as a station agent, retiring in 1977. He worked in the Farragut and Eastport areas.
He was a member of Kootenai Masonic Lodge 24 AF & AM and the Coeur d'Alene Eagles for 19 years. In his younger years he enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was also an amateur photographer.

His wife, Billie, died in 1984.

He is survived by twin sisters Irene McBride of Stockton, Calif., and Ione McNeil of Sherwood, Ore.; brother-in-law James McBride of Stockton, Calif., and sister-in-law Miriam Hatch of Spokane; two nieces and three nephews.

Private family services were held at English Funeral Chapel, Coeur d'Alene.
