Marion (Jimmy) Beall was the lock tender at Lock 25 on the C&O Canal and lived at Edwards Ferry. He was a good river man. He kept a fish box in the river where he stored his catch and would take bags of catfish to the farmers to sell. He took care of the vegetable garden and also operated a small general store at Edward's Ferry. The family home (the lock house) was flooded several times by the swollen Potomac River and the waters washed away the chicken house, toilet, and the store. "Jimmy" went to the store in Poolesville in his horse-drawn buggy to get groceries for the family. In the bad weather, he would ride his horse and the bags containing the food and supplies hung off the sides of the saddle. The children remember his fixing their shoes, playing the "juice harp," and singing church hymns around the house. In the evenings, he would play with the children by having them sit on his lap and he would shake their head, and like magic, money would fall out their ear. ~Source: Beth Ziegler (Ancestry.com)
