After a course at Onondaga Academy he set about the country repairing clocks. He became so successful that he decided to open a jewelry store and repair shop in Oneida, NY. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in an independent company of a volunteer cavalry in Oneida. He was with the army of the Potomac for three years, serving under General McClellan in the Peninsular campaign and with Grant at Petersburg. He served out his term as assistant to Adjutant General Seth Williams until Sept. 1864.

Returning to Syracuse he became a watchmaker at Tracy & Jordan jewelers until 1878 when he purchased the business of Frazer & Frazer. In 1895 he moved the business to the White Memorial building.

He married Miss Emogene C. Gaylord, the daughter of Byron and Emaline Gaylord of Lisbon Illinois. They had two sons, Edward C. with Tiffany Company of New York City, and Charles H. who worked with his father.
