RICHARD L. COX, SR. Mr. Richard Lofton Cox, Sr., 69, died Tuesday, January 10 at his residence at Surfside Beach. Funeral services were held Thursday in the Old Johnsonville Cemetery, conducted by Rev. Bobby Wilkes. Williamsburg Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Cox was born November 9, 1914 at Ards Crossroads, near Hemingway, a son of the late Mellon Vance Cox and Mrs. Lilla Ard Cox. Along with farming interests in Williamsburg and Florence Counties, Mr. Cox was owner and president of Coastal Fertilizer Manufacturing Co. of Hemingway for over 32 years and was president and cotton buyer for the Hemingway Gin Co.

Mr. Cox served on several church boards,the Williamsburg County Library Board,and had served 21 years as a trustee for the Garden City Chapel. He established a college tuition scholarship at Hemingway High School to be awarded to a senior excelling in the vocabulary examination held annually at the school. After his retirement at 52, he spent time at Claybank near Hemingway and Escape Cottage in Surfside Beach.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Louise Boyd Cox of Hemingway; a son, R. Lofton Cox, Jr.of Litchfield Beach; one brother, J. A. Cox, Sr. of Florence; six sisters, Mrs. C. D.Huggins, Sr. of Hemingway, Mrs. M. H, Northington and Mrs. Reed C. Tanner, both of Kingstree, Mrs. Willard T. Nesmith of Nesmith, Mrs. John Carol and Miss Miriam Ashley Cox, both of Florence.
