Obituary
"Bakewell Clay Smith was born in Crawford county, Illinois, January 1, 1853, and departed this life October 3,1917; aged 64 years, 9 months and 2 days. He was united, in marriage to Eliza Jane Daniels August 12, 1883. To this union were born three children. He united with the M. E. church at Kirk Chapel in 1894. When the church was organized at Stoy he moved his membership to that place where he became one of the staunch upholders of the church and the principles of religion, He was a devoted husband and father and ready at all times to help his neighbors in time of need. He leaves to mourn their loss a wife, two sons--Roscoe of Hampshire, Ill., and -Elmer of Robinson, one daughter-Flossie of Robinson, four 'brothers-Guy, Burner and Oren or Crawford county and Sam of Odin, Ill., and one sister --Mrs. Wm. Quick of Robinson, and a host or relatives and friends.
"He was resigned and uncomplaining during, the last days or his illness. His life had been one of beautiful submission to his God and so long as consciousness remained his every attitude was 'Thy will, not mine, be done.' Just as silently and gradually as the night breaks into day, so his soul was loosed from its earthly prison and wafted back to its Creator whence it came.
"Funeral services were held at Kirk Chapel Thursday, October 4th, at 2 p. m. by I. S. McIver, pastor of the United Brethren church."
