John W. Cooke, 81, chief clerk of the Charleston Sanitary Board, died yesterday of a cerebral hemorrhage in a local hospital following an illness of one week.
Mr. Cooke was a former practicing attorney, legislator and educator. He lived at 600 Ohio Ave. He had been employed by the city for the past four years. From 1920 until 1932 he was chief clerk in the State Department of Education. Following his duties with the education department, Mr. Cooke went to a son's farm near Parkersburg and operated the farm for 11 years before returning to Charleston six years ago.
Born at Jesse, Wyoming County, he had lived in Charleston most of his life. He was a son of the late Green M. and Margaret Cooke. Mr. Cooke was a teacher and principal in Wyoming County schools for several years after graduation from Concord College at Athems. He later entered West Virginia University for his degree in law and was admitted to the bar in 1909. Mr. Cooke was elected to the state legislature in 1908.
Mr. Cooke was a member of the Randolph Street Baptist Church and for many years was active in Masonic circles.
Surviving are his wife, the former Mary Elizabeth Swope of Hinton whom he married in 1898; three daughters, Mrs. B. F. Hill and Mrs. George Byers, both of Charleston, and Mrs. J. G. Saunders of Kensington, Md.; two sons, Paul H. Cooke of Charleston and Joseph M. of Huntington; a brother, Elbert G. Cooke of Jesse, 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The body is at Wilson Funeral Home. Services will be tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Robert E. McNeill officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.
