Obituary from Wayne County Record:
"Edward Elvis Allen, son of Thomas Jefferson
and Jane Allen was born near Albion, Edwards
county, Illinois, November 27, 1870. He
answered the final summons in Flora, Illinois
on June 21st, 1924, having lived 53 years, six
months and 24 days.
He was the third member of a family of nine
children, of which one brother and three
sisters have preceded him to the great beyond.
The early years of his life were spent on the
farm in the enjoyment of childhood
experiences and the associations of good home
environment.
In 1885 he moved to Fairfield, Illinois to
engage his inclination for the carpenter trade,
which vocation so harmonized his ambitions
and energies, as to induce him to enter the
lumber industry as a life work and to which his
later years were exclusively devoted.
In 1909 he moved to Cisne, Illinois, where he
became manager of the Southern Illinois
Lumber Co., which position he held for three
years, when he moved to Flora to assist in the
organization of the Flora Lumber Company,
with which he was affiliated in the capacity of
an executive and manager continuously
thereafter.
On December 15th, 1891 he was united in
marriage with Miss Mattie Dickey of Fairfield,
Illinois. This union was blessed with four
children, namely: Charles Elvis, (who was
called home after a brief stay of three years
and four months), Mrs. Mary Jane Cline of
Cincinnati, Leo Ross and Naomi Lucille of Flora,
Illinois, all of his living children being at home
during his last hours.
There is left to mourn his depature, a heart
broken wife, a grief stricken mother, now 81
years old living in Fairfield, Ill., three children
named above, one grandchild, two brothers,
Joseph and Foster P. of Fairfield, Ill.; sisters,
Mrs. Dora May Robertson, Mrs. Ada J. Winslow
of Marianna, Florida."
