Death of Rev. Barnes Saddens Community.

Rev. W. F. Barnes, age 69 years, died at his home here last Sunday afternoon at five o'clock after an illness of practically two weeks. The deceased was for 34 years an active member of the North Alabama Conference, having held appointments that carried him and his family into most every section of the conference. About ten years ago the Methodist Church superannuated him after his health became such that he could not continue in the ministry. Since that time he has resided in LaFayette.

Rev. Barnes was born in Beat Nine of this county, near Old Harmony church, and it was there that he grew to manhood. At the age of 19 years he married Miss Emma Milan, of Daviston, and in the year 1884 he entered the ministry. Six children were born to Rev. and Mrs. Barnes, and after the death of Mrs. Barnes in February, 1895, he was again married, this time to Miss Lou Elizabeth Craig, of Dawson, Ala., who survives him.

Funeral service for the aged superannuated minister was held from the Methodist church on Monday afternoon of this week at three o'clock with all Methodist ministers of the district taking part in the service. Rev. T. H. Johnson, pastor of the Methodist church, directed the service and called on those ministers who best knew the deceased to bear testimony of him. Revs. Archibald, presiding elder of the Roanoke district; C. W. Searles, of Langdale, and H. S. Matthews were among those who spoke of the life and works of the deceased brother. Rev. T. L. McDonald, pastor of the church at Roanoke read a scripture, and W. L. Spearman, pastor of the church at Lanett, led the prayer.

He is survived by the widow and five children, Mrs. J. L. Miller, Berry, Ala.; L. F. Barnes, Northport, Ala., E. M. Barnes, LaFayette; W. A. Barnes, of Berry, and Miss Nettie Barnes, of LaFayette.

Interment was in the LaFayette Cemetery with Robinson & Cutler in charge.

Honorary pallbearers were: Revs. R. M. Archibald, T. L. McDonald, W. M. McDonald, W. L. Spearman, W. M. McCain, J. A. Vann, H. S. Matthews, C. W. Seals, Pinkard and Matthewson, and W. R. Chatfield, J. T. Andrews, E. W. Willingham, D. T. Tatum, L. S. Schuessler, Chas. Schuessler and A. C. Tatum. Active pallbearers were L. F. Walton, Joe H. Boyd, Rea Schuessler, R. J. Newman, C. E. Fuller and E. L. Stough.

Rev. W. F. Barnes.

We shall not pass up this opportunity of expressing a few of our thoughts as they come to us as we think of that noble character, one of God's gladiators, who on last Sunday just as the sun was sinking behind the western horizon and bringing to a close the day on which God rested from His labors, laid his armor down and passed on with other departed spirits to the place where he had longed to go and of which he had so often spoken. During the past five years, it was our privilege to know him intimately, and his frequent visits to our office was a source of pleasure and a recreation of thought. We loved this old warrior because we had learned to know them, we respected him because his life commanded it and we honored him because he was one of God's anointed. We shall miss Brother Barnes and his frequent visits and we shall yearn for that frequent counsel which he has so often given us, and for which we are thankful. May those who have known this man strive to bring themselves under the same assurance as did he as he dwelt among us and on the day he went home. Though his tomb is silent, yet he speaks to us, and beckons the way.
