Joseph Roger Spates, prominent Montgomery countian and one-time Mayor of Rockville, died Friday morning at the Washington Sanitarium, Takoma Park, aged 68 years.

A son of the late Richard and Clara Spates, the deceased who was a resident of Comus, was a retired lawyer, having graduated from the University of Virginia in 1905. He served as Mayor of Rockville from 1926 to 1932, and was vice-president of the Suburban Title and Investment Corporation.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Annie E. Spates; two sons, John Richard Spates and George Edward Spates, both of Comus; a brother, Webster Spates, Hollywood, Fla.; and two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Bachman, Seattle, Wash., and Mrs. Anna Shaw, Philadelphia.

The body is at present at the funeral home in Barnesville to remain there until noon on Sunday. The funeral will take palce from the late home at Comus on Monday morning at 11 o'clock, daylight time, followed by interment in Monocacy Cemetery at Beallsville. William B. Hilton, funeral director.

NOTE: His bungalow was in Rockville, right next to Rockville high school.
