Dan was the 4th of 10 children (2nd son) born of Daniel "Dan" Barnard (1730-1784) and his wife Lydia Dodge. Dan's siblings were: Joseph (b. 1754), Esther (1756-1809), Abigail (b. 1757), Rufus (1761-1851), Andrew (1763-1823), Roger (b. 1766), Lydia (b. 1768), Myriam (b. 1771), and Freedom (b. 1773).

In May 1776, at the age of 17 years, Dan, a resident of Coventry, Tolland County, Connecticut, enlisted as a Private for one year. He joined Captain James Dana's Company, Colonel Andrew Ward's Connecticut Regiment of the Continental Line. Colonel Ward's Regiment joined General George Washington's army at New York in August and was stationed at first near Ft. Lee. Marching with the troops to White Plains, and subsequently into New Jersey, it took part in the Battles of Trenton, December 25, 1776, and Princeton, January 3, 1777, and encamped with General Washington at Morristown, New Jersey until expiration of its term, May, 1777.

Dan was engaged in the battles of White Plains, Trenton and Princeton. He was honorably discharged in May 1777, with the whole Company, at Chatham, New Jersey.

In the 1790 US Census taken in Vermont in 1791, Dan was enumerated in the Town of Chittenden, Rutland County as the Head of a Household with 1 Free White Male of 16 years and upwards and 1 Free White Female.

In the 1800 US Census of the Town of Sharon, Windsor County, Vermont, Dan was enumerated as the Head of a Household with 1 Free White Male of 26 thru 44 years of age, 1 Free White Male 10 thru 15, 1 Free White Male under 10, 1 Free White Female 26 thru 44, 1 Free White Female 10 thru 15, and 2 Free White Female under 10.

In the 1810 US Census of Sharon, Windsor County, Vermont, Dan was enumerated as the Head of a Household with 1 Free White Male and 1 Free White Female of 45 years and over, 1 Free White Male 16 thru 25, 2 Free White Females 16 thru 25, and 1 Free White Female 10 thru 15.

On August 24, 1816, William, the son of Dan and Sarah, died at the age of 22 in Sharon, Windsor County, Vermont.

In the 1820 US Census of Sharon, Windsor County, Vermont, Dan was enumerated as the Head of a Household with 1 Free White Male and 1 Free White Female of 45 and upwards and 1 Free White Female of 16 and under 26. One person was engaged in agriculture.

In the 1830 US Census of Sharon, Windsor County, Vermont, Dan was enumerated as the Head of a Household with 1 Free White Male and 1 Free White Female of 70 to 80 years of age.
