U.S. Congressman. Moving to New York in 1847, he became successful in the mercantile business in New York City, in 1850. Entering politics, he was secretary of the New York Board of Trade and Transportation and park commissioner of Brooklyn (1876-82). In 1883, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-eighth and Forty-ninth Congresses, serving until 1887. Declining a re-nomination, he served as chairman of U.S. Board of Indian Commissioners in 1890, was a member of New York Canal Commission in 1898 and resumed his mercantile pursuits until his death.
