Siblings: Mathilda, Martin, Russel, Christina, Elton, Clarence, James
Spouse: Basil Martus (married 6-28-1928)
Their Children: Richard & Rita (twins), Geraldine, Patricia
Lucille was 19, in 1926, when she lost her mother, Cecilia. Because her father never remarried, she and sister, Mathilda, helped him raise the 6 younger children. However, she married Basil Martus two years later, in 1928, and, in 1930, they became the parents of twins, Richard and Rita.
The family made their home in Pontiac, Michigan, where the couple owned a religious articles store, "The Madonna Shop", for many years. Two of their daughters, Rita and Patricia, became members of the "Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary", whose motherhouse is in Monroe, Michigan, and remained there for many years, before choosing the secular life, including marriage.
After their daughter, Geraldine, married a man from Cheboygan, Michigan, Lucille and Basil moved there, as well, where they spent the remainder of their lives. During her free time, Lucille enjoyed making lovely handcrafted items, which she proudly showed to those who visited.
On June 24,1978, in anticipation of their June 28th 50th wedding anniversary, the couple was honored with a special Mass, in which many gifted family members participated, followed by a gala celebration, hosted by their family, at St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. They received a Papal Blessing from Pope Paul VI, and congratulatory messages from President Jimmy Carter and wife, Rosalyn, and Governor William Milliken. Lucille wore a beautiful golden gown she made for the occasion, and her original bridesmaid, Mrs Clem Cleveland, also wearing a lovely gown, attended her. Mr Cleveland stood-in for the best man.
Lucille was a strong believer in natural foods and supplements, which she consumed daily, as a way to remain in good health. Her long life is a testimonial to their benefits.
Lucille's funeral was held at noon, Monday, June 16, 1997, at St Mary/St Charles Catholic Church, Cheboygan.
