Olive Rae DeRuwe

Olive Rae Knight DeRuwe, 87, passed away Aug. 14, 2011, at Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla, Wash.
Olive Rae was born on the Whetstone in Columbia County, Dec. 7, 1923, to Michael B. and Carrie Knight. She attended New Hope, Central and Whetstone grade schools, graduating from Dayton High School in 1941.
On Jan. 11, 1941, she and Elmer DeRuwe were married in Lewiston, Idaho. After Elmer returned from his US Navy service during WWII, they made their home on the Tucannon. In 1995, after retiring from farming, they moved to Waitsburg, celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary in 2006.
During WWII, Olive worked for the Corps of Engineers in Pasco, then Columbia REA after moving back to Dayton. Later, she was employed by the Green Giant in the Payroll Department.
She had a keen interest in antiques and local history, collecting old crockery and tools used by the early settlers. Also, Olive and Elmer enjoyed their time in the Blue Mountains, snowmobiling and spending time at their cabin.
Olive is survived by three children: Patti DeRuwe Eaton of Dayton, Wash.; Maggie DeRuwe Martin of San Jose, Cali.; and Mike DeRuwe of Prescott, Wash.; three grandchildren: Dusty McQuary of Spokane, Wash., Deanne DeRuwe Wilbur of Walla Walla, and Dirk DeRuwe also of Prescott; and two great-grandchildren: Naomi McQuary of Spokane and Abram Wilbur of Walla Walla. She was preceded in death by her husband Elmer; her brother, Donald Knight; and her sister, Odetta Knight Brodhead.
The funeral service will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011, at the Dayton Methodist Church. Pastor Bill Peck will officiate. Burial will be in the Dayton Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Palus Museum or a charity of donor's choice through Mountain View-Colonial DeWitt, 1551 Dalles Military Road, Walla Walla, WA 99362.
