John Newton Palmer was born at London. Ohio, November 22, 1846. He was the son of James Harvey and Arabella (Cryder) Palmer. He was married to Mary C. Cross, September 9, 1868 of DeWitt County, Illinois, who departed this life June 25, 1905. Born to this union were nine children, eight of whom grew to manhood and womanhood. Eunice having died at infancy and Lily in 1912 at thirty-one years of age, leaving Mrs. Vinnie Wingert of Larned, KS, Charles B. Palmer of Aulne, KS, Edward O. Palmer of Johnson, KS; Elmore H. Palmer, John V. Palmer, Cora C. Palmer and Susie D. Palmer of Liberal, KS.

He united with the Christian Church at seventeen years of age and lived this life till his death on Saturday, March 15, 1930.

He moved to Marion County, Kansas in 1871, where he homesteaded afterward moving to Seward County in 1906.

Aside from the named above there are twenty grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren and a host of friends.

Mr. Palmer served as a public school teacher during his earlier years. He was a good thinker and well read man of his day. He searched the scriptures daily and possessed strong faith and Christian zeal. He was identified with the Christian Church of this community and was highly honored by that brotherhood. Funeral services were conducted in the Christian Church Monday afternoon by Rev. J.N. Gibble. The body was taken to Marion County, Kansas for burial. The Miller Mortuary was in charge.
