Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Tuesday, June 20, 1899

Sunday afternoon, while little Joe
Fitzpatrick, the five-and-a-half-year-
old son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph J. Fitz-
patrick, was playing with five or six
other boys in the Cummer Lumber
Company's yard, Berkley, a nineteen-
year-old colored boy named Ernest
Bright gave an empty car, on which
the children were amusing themselves,
a shove, and the car struck against an-
other loaded with lumber. Little Fitz-
patrick, who was leaning over the end
of the moving car, was badly crushed,
causing internal hemmorhages, which
resulted in his death at his parents'
home an hour after the accident. The
physicians in attendance were Drs.
Morgan, McConville and Norfleet. The
negro Bright was arrested, but it was
shown that he had no intention to in-
jure any of the children, and was re-
leased by the Berkley authorities this
morning. The Coroner held an inquest
to-day, the jury rendering a verdict of
accidental killing. The funeral of little
Joe was conducted yesterday afternoon
at 4:30 o'clock by Father Doherty, of
St. Mary's Catholic Church, Norfolk.
The remains were interred in Portlock
Cemetery, Portsmouth.
