Maine Governor. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1925 and became an engineer with the Bangor Hydro Electric Company. A Republican, he was elected to the Maine House of Representatives in 1946 and served one term. In 1946 he won election to the Maine Senate and served six terms, including holding the positions of Majority Leader and Senate President. In January, 1959 Governor Edmund Muskie resigned so he could be sworn into the US Senate seat he won in 1958. As President of the Maine Senate, Haskell succeeded to the governorship and served five days until the inauguration of Clinton Clauson, the winner of the 1958 election. Though elected to a seventh term, after leaving the governor's office Haskell resigned from the Senate to become Bangor Hydro Electric's President, and he later served as Chairman of the Board before retiring in 1985. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Bangor's Merchant's National Bank and a member of the University of Maine Board of Trustees. He died with Gladys Stetson, his longtime live in companion, as the result of an accidental house fire caused by a carelessly disposed of cigarette. The Haskell Scholarship he created provides financial aid to engineering students at the University of Maine, and he also endowed a professorship in electrical engineering.
