Ebenezer was the son of John Smith (1719-176_) and his wife Mary Smith. Ebenezer's siblings were at least: Rezinah (b. 1751), Twins - Abigail (1753-17__) and Zerviah (b. 1753), Olive (b. 1754), and Mary or Joanna (b. 1756).

During the Revolutionary War, Ebenezer was a resident of Canterbury, Windham County, Connecticut. On May 8, 1775, Ebenezer enlisted in Captain John Durkee's 3rd Company, Colonel Israel Putnam's 3rd Connecticut Regiment. The 3rd Regiment was recruited from Windham County with one Company from New London County. The Regiment marched in May by Company to the camps forming around Boston. It was stationed during the siege in Putnam's Center Division at Cambridge until expiration of its term of service, December 10, 1775. Brigadier-General Putnam was the senior officer present at the Battle of Bunker Hill, June 17. His Regiment was adopted Continental in July. Ebenezer was discharged December 12, 1775.

Ebenezer married, October 15, 1783, at Canaan, Litchfield County, Connecticut, Lucy Stephens (1754-1842) by whom he had 3 children (all daughters): Lucy Phebe (1782-1854), Ruth Aurelia (1786-1867), and Electa R. (1794-1831).

Ebenezer came to Poultney, Rutland County, Vermont, the latter part of the 18th century and settled on what became Beaman Street.

In the 1790 US Census (taken in Vermont in 1791) of Poultney, Ebenezer was enumerated as a Head of a Family with 1 Free White Male of 16 year and upwards and 3 Free White Females.

In the 1800 US Census of Poultney, Ebenezer was enumerated as a Head of a Family with 1 Free White Male of 26 thru 44 years of age, 1 Free White Female 45 and over, 1 Free White Female 16 thru 25, 1 Free White Female 10 thru 15, and 1 Free White Female under 10.
