John Frederick Hein, born in the southern part of Germany [Alsbach, Duchy of Nassau] July 11, 1833, died at his house in Union, MO, April 18, 1896, aged 62 years, 9 months and 7 days.

After acquiring an education and serving his time at a trade, that of cabinet maker, in his native land, Mr. Hein came to America in 1853. From New York he drifted, with the current, westward, stopping to work in Poughkeepsie, Buffalo, Cleveland, etc., and arrived in St. Louis in 1861. He there became a victim to the epidemic prevailing in the land, --- the war fever, and joined Battery C, 1st MO light artillery, and served its guns on Shiloh and many other sanguinary fields. After his muster-out, he came to Franklin county to visit his comrades in arms, and settled in Union, where he has since made his home. In 1869 he married Mrs. Niemeyer [Neimaier], nee Miss Hannah Dress.

Being a great reader, intelligent, and having a keen appreciation of humor, he was entertaining company. His religious creed was the Golden Rule, and he lived up to its precepts. During the past two years he had practically given up business matters, --- the furniture trade, --- to his son, and a general decline has been painfully noticeable. Much of the time has been spent with the family circle, where the relations were most fortunately happy. He was confined to his bed but three days with real sickness, --- bilious colic and bowel obstruction, --- and retained his consciousness to the last.

His life partner and two grown children, Anna and Edward, and Miss Amelia Neimeyer [Neimaier], to whom he has been a father, survive to mourn the loss of a kind husband and parent, and share the sympathies of the community. Mr. J. W. Hein is a brother of the deceased.

NOTE: research from the church birth and baptism records in Alsbach indicates John's parents were William Frederick & Anna both with the Hein surname. Cousins? The couple had at least 7 children. In addition to John, younger brother Jacob Hein also emigrated. He married Emma M K Neimaier, daughter of John's wife by her first marriage.
