New Hampshire Governor. After working in the mercantile industry in Boston, he moved to Concord, New Hampshire and established a successful wholesale grocery business. He became involved with the Concord and Claremont Railroad, serving as a construction agent and later as the railroad superintendent. He was a member of the New Hampshire State Senate, (1858-60). In 1863, he was elected as a Republican the 37th Governor of New Hampshire, serving until 1865. As Governor, he was a strong supporter for the Union during the Civil War. He provided bonuses and supplemental salary payments to soldiers, plus arranged for the transport of soldiers traveling to New Hampshire on furlough and returning to the front lines. After leaving office, he lived in retirement until his death at age 55.
