Actor. Born Meshilem Meier Weisenfreund in Lemberg, Austria, he joined the Yiddish Art Theatre New York, in 1908, performed on Broadway and Hollywood stages until 1926. He began with Fox Studios in 1928, and appeared in the short reel films "Four Walls", "This One Man" and "Counselor-at-Law". He was best remembered for his Academy Award as Best Actor role as Louis Pasteur in "The Story of Louis Pasteur" (1936). His other film credits include "I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang" (1932), "Scarface" (1932), "The Life of Emil Zola" (1937), "The Good Earth" (1937) and "Angel On My Shoulder" (1946). For television he appeared on "The Philco-Goodyear Playhouse", "The Ford Television Theatre", "G.E. True Theatre", "Playhouse 90" and "Saints and Sinners". He died of a heart disorder at age 71 in Montecito, California and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
