Moved to LaGuerre, Huntingdon County, Quebec, Canada at age 13 years, where he had a store; moved to Dundee, Huntingdon County, Quebec, wher he operated a store and was in the potash business by 1842; Postmaster 1844-1912 at Dundee, customs agent, and in a sawmill and lumbar business partnership with his brother-in-law, Peter Buchanan. He had a son, William L. Baker, by Isabelle Cattenach, out of wedlock, prior to marrying Margaret Cross.
