U.S. Congressman. Educated at Groton Academy, he was a successful paper manufacturer and president of the Boston and Fitchburg Railroad. He was a member of the Hoosac Tunnel Commission and member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives (1836, 1842-43) and served in the Massachusetts State Senate, (1862-64). In 1872, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-second Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William B. Washburn, reelected to the Forty-third Congress and served until his death at age 73.
