Jackson teen killed in hit-and-run accident

Tommy Wheaton painted mannequins to help African-American women coping with breast cancer better handle the loss of their hair.

He pushed and cheered on fellow students in his Algebra I class at Jim Hill High, making sure they understood the subject's concepts and had the fire in their bellies to do well on state-mandated testing.

He was, in the words of teacher Marla Mondie, "my star student."

The 17-year-old is being mourned today at Jim Hill High after his death Sunday night, the victim of a hit-and-run accident in which his bicycle was struck by the driver of a 1997 white Cadillac.

Police today are seeking the driver of the car, said police spokeswoman Colendula Green.

Wheaton died at Central Mississippi Medical Center of injuries sustained in the 10:30 p.m. incident in which his bicycle was struck as he was traveling eastbound in the 200 block of Archer Avenue near Walker Avenue in south Jackson, Green said.

"He was ejected 80 feet from the initial point of impact," Green said.

Jim Hill High Principal Bobby Brown said the district's lead counselor and a number of social workers this morning are joining Jim Hill's three guidance counselors to give support to grieving students.

"The students are discussing it, and the students from the neighborhood have been discussing it," Brown said. "They are saddened, but they are coping very well. I haven't had any students yet who needed additional grief counseling.

"We've had a lot of hugging, and a lot of handshakes."

Mondie said that Wheaton was one of the school's top performers on nine-weeks exams.

"He was a very humble student, extremely smart, very respectful," Mondie said. "He was a wonderful student to have in class. Whenever I taught him in class, he made sure that the other students caught on."

Mondie said she was just discussing with Greta Terry, the district's assistant superintendent for high schools, how well Wheaton had been performing. With another student, Wheaton shared the honor of having the school's highest score on the Algebra I subject-area test.

"When he entered the building on Friday, I pulled him aside and congratulated him on his achievements," said Mondie, who teaches Algebra I and International Baccalaureate math studies.

"Tommy was very competitive in nature. He was one of the students who always pushed my male students to do better in Algebra I," Mondie said. "He pushed them continuously to do better every day."

The driver of the car that struck Wheaton will face charges of felony hit and run, Green said.
