"THE MEN PROMINENT IN BUILDING UP COOPERSTOWN during the last half century, as their names recur to us at this time ... EDWARD CLARK purchased 'Apple Hill' in 1856, on which he erected 'Fernleigh' and other costly buildings. He also caused to be built the Hotel Fenimore, Pioneer Mills, several cottages and farm houses, giving employment to a great many mechanics and laborers. He was mainly instrumental in giving the village its present Water Works system. His son ALFRED CORNING CLARK, Mrs. CLARK and her son EDWARD S. CLARK, have since placed in the village the Gymnasium, the new Hospital building, the Y. M. C. A. and Library building, the Cooper Grounds, and have freed Lakewood Cemetery of its large debt, all at a cost of many thousands of dollars."
