U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Harvard University in 1917 and during World War I, served as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy, (1917-19). After the war, he was employed as a chemist (1919-22), studied law at Boston University Law School, was admitted to the bar in 1927 and commenced to practice law in Boston, Massachusetts. He was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, (1929-34) and in 1935, was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-fourth and Seventy-fifth Congresses and served until his resignation in 1937. After leaving Congress, he served as chief justice of the Superior Court of Massachusetts, until his death.
