Daughter of Wesley Ellis and Eliza King. Widow of Esau J. Whitney Jr., wife of Jonas R. Hill

Rachel and Esau Whitney had four children:

1. Sarah Manette (Nettie) b. 1858, Easton Twp., Ionia, MI m. Edwin Ray (or Ray Edwin) Cilley. (Sarah named for Uncle Sylvenus Ellis's wife).

2. Herbert Wesley, b. 1860 "" m. Flora B. Bullis (Herbert's middle name was from his mother's father)

3. Edward E., b. 1862 "" m. Ida, 3 children (including one son named Adon, after his mother's brother, Sylvenus Adon Ellis).

4. Mary Louise, b. 1864 "" d. 1866. (named for mother's sister).

An Estimable Old Lady of This Village
Passed Away at her Home on
Wednesday Afternoon.
Funeral Services Will Be Held at the
Residence Tomorrow After-
noon at Two o'Clock.
Mrs. Rachel Hill died at her resi
dence in this village at 4 o'clock on
Wednesday afternoon at the age of 73
years. She had been in ill health for
several years, but not until three
weeks ago was she compelled to take
to her bed. The immediate cause of
Mrs. Hill's death was Bright's disease.
Funeral services will be conducted
at the residence tomorrow afternoon
at 2 o'clock by Rev. J. W. Heard and
the interment will take place in Oak
Knoll cemetery.
Mrs. Hill's maiden name was
Rachel Ellis and she was born in
Dundee, Yates county, New York, on
April 13, 1835. When about 20 years
of age she moved with her parents to
Ionia, Michigan, and on May 26,1857,
she was married to Esau J. Whitney
at Grand Rapids, Mich. With her
husband she came to Minnesota and
located in Princeton in October, 1859,
where her husband died on April 24,
1865. There were four children born
of this union, two of whom are living,
namely, Herbert W. and E. E. Whit
ney, both residents of Princeton. On
October 24, 1867, she was married to
Jonas R. Hill, who died June 24, 1907.
By this marriage there was one son,
Clarence E. Hill, a business man of
this village.
Mrs. Hill was a lady possessing
many virtues she was charitable and
kind, a woman whom to know was to
love. She had endured much bodily
suffering, but she endured it with for
titude, knowing full well that some
day she would reap her reward in that
great hereafter where all suffering
ends.
