World War I French General. Born in Tulle, Franch, he began his service in the French Army being commissioned a Sub-Lieutenant with French Artillery in 1878. He served with distinction in actions at Algeria, Tunisia, China and the Boxer Rebellion of 1898-1901. In 1913, he was promoted Colonel of the 5th Artillery Regiment and with the advent of World War I, he was sent to European Western Front. He played a key role in defeating German attacks during the Alsace Offensive, Battle of the Marne, Battle of the Aisne and was promoted to General in October 1914. For his actions at the Battle of Verdun, he was promoted Commander in Chief of the French Armies on December 12, 1916. In the spring of 1917, he organized what was to be known as the Nivelle Offensive at Chemin des Dames, Franch, a strategic ground for the assualt on the German Army. Three battles were fought along the Chemin des Dames and the offensive failed to achieve a breakthrough on the Western Front, resulting in 187,000 French casualties. General Nivelle had predicted a great success and the French country was so bitterly disappointed that General Nivelle was replaced by General Petain as Commander in Chief on May 15, 1917. In December 1917, Nivelle was sent to serve as Commander in Chief of the French Army in North Africa. After the war, he returned to France and retired from the military in 1921. He died at age 67 in Paris, France.
