Polly Ann Luttrell had a hard life, there is no doubt. Her parents, William "Lewis" Luttrell and Mahala Ann Luttrell were first cousins. Polly married first to James Luttrell (a cousin of sorts) at the age of 18 and they lived near Camden and Pulaski County, Missouri. But after only a couple of days into the marriage, James beat her up really bad sending Polly running back home. Polly's brother, George, went over to their house and shot James as he walked out onto the porch. I'm told this was in 1866. At about this same time, Southern Symphathizers were riding around the counties and lynching any ex-Union soldiers they could find so it was most likely attributed to their doing as George was never arrested for the crime. Polly was told that James ran off and later that he was killed.

Polly married her second husband on 11 Sep 1871 in Schuyler County, Illinois which is where her family came from before settling in Missouri. Her second marriage was to George Mason Dallas Thornton and it is by him that she had all her children. But as fate would have it, George suffered from Epilepsy due to an accident during the Civil War and was prone to having seizures. Family stories tell that his wife and kids came home to find him dead by the fireplace. Polly was left with a bunch of small children, including a 3 month old, and no income.

Three years later on 30 Sep 1889 in Tiff City, McDonald County, Missouri, she married "Old Blind" John H. Luttrell who lived in Bridges, Ozark County, Missouri (down by Springfield). My mother told me that Nancy Thornton, Polly's daughter, didn't like John Luttrell much and by 1893 she had left and moved back to Brumley. John didn't live that long either and by 1900 Polly found herself a Widow again and is found living in Brumley, Missouri with her youngest children.

Polly died 24 Jan 1912 near Hulsey, Washington County, Missouri from Consumption. She was buried in the Bryant Grove (Now called New Hope) Cemetery on 26 Jan 1912.
