A direct descendant of Colonel Benjamin and Lucy (Swearingen) Stephenson, Palemon Howard Dorsett was a prominent American horticulturalist. Although extremely successful in his professional life, his personal life was fraught with tragedy: He and his wife Mary Virginia nee Payne suffered the loss of three of their four known chidren. Their only child surviving to adulthood was James Howard Dorsett; he died of tuberculous at the age of 27.

Palemon H. Dorsett presented what is now known as the Dorsett Seal die to the State Department initially in 1894. Its origin and provenance remain a mystery to this day. It is presently housed at Mount Vernon.
