I Jesse Gardiner was born Oct 20th 1829 at Burnsgreen near Chalford, Gloucestershire England, son of Charles and Maria Jefferies Gardiner, third child in the faimly . in 1835 or 36 the faimily all moved from Gloucestershire to Shrewsbury in shropshire about 100 miles. being very young I never knew many of my relations in Gloucestershire.
I grew up at Shrewsbury, and there went to work at 9 years old. The work so ordered I could get 3 hours of school each day, till I was 13 years old and then I worked full time, 12 hours a day. in 1847 a man name Thomas from Liverpool, an Elder of this church, came & preached in the streets of Shrewsbury (he was a native Elder). much being said by the public, I went to hear him (as also my folks). I was well versed in the Bibble . I told my follks this man preached the truth, if Bibble was true. I soon could see with new eyes, the glorious rays of light that bursted to my view such as I never knew nor could not comprehend in the sunday school.
in a short time all manner of things was said about this Elder. I continued to go and heer him very much to the anoyance of my folks. I well remember these times.
I still continued in the Sunday school. till the 15th day of July 1848. I then went and was Baptised by this same Elder, and oh then I had to face a frowning world, and nothing but bitter persecution was my lot at home, and all my friends became enemies. I was yet a minor in age. But God's spirit was with me, I was Baptised July 15, 1848. In March 1849 I was ordained a Priest by Elder Mils Andras of Liverpool and of Utah & was sent out to preach the Gospel all round Shrewsbury. in the summer of 1849, I was on the 30th of July called to the office of an Elder, and placed to preside over the Shrewsbury Branch, as it was then become a Branch in the Liverpool Conference. Chester D Evans, David James, and others of us preached all round Shrewsbury. The Shrewsbury Branch was noted for young men and young women Zealous in the good work of God. it soon became a Conference with Joseph W Young from Salt Lake presiding.
I laboured for near 6 years faithfully in this Conference & was its secretary when I left in 1854. having saved means by the help of God I was enabled to emigrate in March 1854 (David James preceded me in 1853). 3 months before I left I married one of the sisters by the name of Elizabeth Howells, a faithful sister in the church.
we set sail on the 12th of March 1854 and landed at New Orleans on 3rd of May 1854. we had severe storms in the Irish Channel tossed about for 8 days. we sailed on a ship (American) called the John M. Wood - 300 passengers I think - from new Orleans to Saint Louis on Steam Boat. we had cholera, many saints died. Was quanteened there for some days. started again up Missouri river some 400 miles. had cholera again, many saints died. and also at Kansas our fitting out place - in Crossing the plains we loss 33 more. my wife being one. She died at Sweet Water of untimely childbirth. I suffered much with bleeding feet on the journey.
Arrived at Salt Lake Sep 30th - 1854 nearly worn out (david James come to Draperville in 1853). I lived with him till in Jan of 1855. I then went to Palmyra on Spanish Fork & hired to work. put in crops and the grasshoppers came & eat all clean. on the 8th of May 1855 I came to Springville. crops eat up here also. it was hard times in the summer of 1856 till new crops came in.
in Sep the 7 day 1855, I married Elizabeth Smith. Bishop Johnson performing the ceremony. on the 1st of Nov 1862 I went to Salt Lake Endowment House and received the Blessings there. I took other wives since, But none since 1873. in 1872 I went to England on a mission, travelled in the Bristol Conference.
I was in the Elders Quorum till 1857 when I was called to join the 51st Quorum of seventies then organised in Springville & was their clerk for many years. as also in the Elders Quorum, also assistant Branch Clerk for many years. was asked to join the High Priest Quorum, being orfained by James E Daniels and others at Provo 15th March 1890. assisted Bro Clements as clerk in the High Priest Quorum till he died, then was voted Clerk of the Quorum. I went to the Penetentiary 4 months Sept 17th 1888. my wife Elizabeth died Feb 5th 1898, and for 45 years have passed through all things occurring in Springville
Nov 10 - 1900 went to Salt Lake Temple and done some work for the dead.
