Services Sunday For Sgt. Gunter Aiken War Hero

Funeral services for Sgt. Noah Gunter, 24, who died in action on October 18, 1944 at Buttinge, Holland, will be held at the Wagenger Methodist church at 4:00 Sunday afternoon, Rev. J. Walter Johnson, pastor of St. John's Methodist church in Aiken, and Rev. M. W. Lever will conduct the services. Interment will be in the Wagener cemetery. The Aiken Post of the American Legion will furnish an honorary escort for the funeral. Military honors will be accorded by a detachment from Fort Jackson. Active pallbearers will be Ray Hydrick, Thomas Craig, Roy Hatto, Lewis Sheppherd, Eugene Ready and Henry Kirkland. The remains arrived in Aiken Tuesday morning and will be at the George Funeral Home until 10 o'clock Sunday morning after which time the body will be removed to the home of Mrs. Eula Gunter, 919 Marion St. Sgt. Gunter was the son of Mrs Eula Shepperd Gunter and the late John B. Gunter. He was born in Lexington county, and before entering the services was employed by the Georgia Air Service in Bennettsville. Sgt. Gunter was a member of the 8th Air Force and was based in England. At the time of his death he was on his 15th mission, Among the decoration he received while in the service are the Air Medal with Oak Leaf cluster, the Purple Heart awarded posthumously, the American Defense, and the European Theater ribbons. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Eula Gunter, Aiken; one sister, Miss Ruth Gunter, Aiken; one brother, John B. Gunter, Jr., now with the Merchant Marine; and a number of aunts and uncles.
