U.S. Senator. He was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives (1803-04), graduated from Middlebury College Vermont, in 1807, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Northampton, Massachusetts. He was a member of the Massachusetts State Senate, (1808-10, 13) and a member, Governor’s council, in 1816. In 1816, he was elected to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Christopher Gore, serving until 1818. He died of heart disease at age 48 and was the son of U.S. Congressman George Ashmun.
