Enlisted August 4, 1862 at age 21 from Machias, Maine as a private in Company B, 11th Maine Volunteer Infantry. He was first promoted to sergeant, then 1st sergeant, then to 2nd lieutenant April 17, 1865 and transferred to Company A. Mustered out February 13, 1866.

He was wounded in action several times: May 17, 1864 at Bermuda Hundred; August 16, 1864 at the Second Battle of Deep Bottom, March 31, 1865; and again at Clover Hill, Virginia (Appomattox). During Lee's surrender, he had a narrow escape by having his handkerchief cut from under his chin.

After the Civil War he was commissioned as aid-de-camp, with the rank of colonel, on the staff of the governor of Minnesota July 10, 1896.
