He was wounded in action several times: May 17, 1864 at Bermuda Hundred; August 16, 1864 at the Second Battle of Deep Bottom, March 31, 1865; and again at Clover Hill, Virginia (Appomattox). During Lee's surrender, he had a narrow escape by having his handkerchief cut from under his chin.
After the Civil War he was commissioned as aid-de-camp, with the rank of colonel, on the staff of the governor of Minnesota July 10, 1896.
