Born in Starkville, Oktibbeha County, Mississippi to parents J. Benton Elliiott and Roberta Irene Exum. She was visiting her brother (Charles Murray Elliott) in Dallas in 1903 where she met Robert Lee Hardy. When she returned home to Mississippi, Robert followed her and married her there. They returned to Dallas to live and all of her eight children were born at home.
