1st US Assistant Secretary of State and Confederate diplomat. Mann, who attended West Point but never graduated, spent three decades as a diplomat for the United States holding the the positions of American consul to Bremen, Commissioner to Hungary and Minister to Switzerland before being named the first Assistant Secretary of State in 1853. He sided with the Confederacy during the War Between the States and was selected as one of the first Confederate commissioners to Europe in 1861, later being named Commissioner for Belgium and the Vatican. He died at the age of 88, having never returned to his native land.
