Nobel Prize Laureate Scientist. He received his education at the Collège Saint Baube and the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris, France and the Public Health School at Strasbourg in Alsace, France. In 1870, he served as a medical assistant-major during the Franco-German war followed by his appointment as Chair of Military Diseases and Epidemics at the École de Val-de-Grâce in 1874. From 1878 to 1883 while at Bône, Algeria, he began research on human malarial parasites. His research, later confirmed by his work at the San Spirito Hospital in Rome, resulted in the discovery of the cause of malaria and the identification of protozoa as a cause of disease. Laveran focused his research for nearly three decades in the field of pathogenic protozoa, first returning as Professor of Military Hygiene at the École de Val-de-Grâce in 1884, then as Medical Officer of the military hospital at Lille and as Director of Health Services of the 11th Army Corps at Nantes in 1894. In 1896, he joined the Pasteur Institute in Paris as Chief of the Honorary Service. For his work, he received the Bréant Prize from the Academy of Sciences in 1889 and the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1907.
