VALLIANT, Okla. — Funeral of Matthew (Matt) Watson, 80, descendant of early-day settlers of this area, was held Thursday afternoon in Wheelock Presbyterian Church near Millerton by the Rev. Bill Crews, vicar of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Idabel. Burial was made in Wheelock
Cemetery.
Matt Watson, whose grandparents had been neighbors of Andrew Jackson in Tennessee before coming to this frontier region prior to 1830, was born at Clarksville, Tex., son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Sam Watson. The family had had extensive holdings in the old Jonesboro, Tex., and Pecan Point neighborhoods along Red River.
He was educated at Sewanee Military Academy and the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn., where he was a charter member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.
He was an Episcopalian and a Mason. A retired farmer and rancher, he had been in failing health for some time, but until becoming seriously ill recently, he had been agent for The Paris News in Valliant, walking the delivery route regularly.
His death occurred Wednesday at the Joe Prince Rest Home here.
Surviving are two children, Matthew Watson, Jr., Redding, Calif., who arrived here shortly before his father's death, and Mrs. Jim Harris, Broken Bow; one grandchild; these brothers and sisters: Sam Watson, Berkeley, Calif.; Harry Watson, Alpine, Tex.; Mrs. Jennie Watson Smith, Texarkana, Tex., and Mrs. Margaret Wheeler, Milwaukee, Wis.
